Whether you are a visual learner or not, using visual aids while you are studying for exams in college is an option that helps you manage time, distractions, and helps you organize, plan, and prioritize.

The brain recalls, remembers, and is able to apply information when you actively participate in your studying..

Active recall is one of the most effective and efficient strategies for students to use while studying. This technique actively stimulates your brain while learning, and provides the brain with a "file cabinet" through which information retrieval is possible.

Doing something with your class content like making flowcharts, diagrams, mind maps, and tables, is how your brain makes associations visually and forces itself to retrieve and remember information when you are learning.

Some other ways to actively study are:

-use Venn Diagrams
-draw images
-make outlines
-use flashcards
-categorize
-make graphs
-use color and shapes
-teach the content out loud

In opposition, passive learning examples are reading notes, summarizing, re-reading, listening to lectures, or highlighting. These habits and practices do not allow for solid learning. and memorization.
